I always enjoy this book. I love the progression of animals and the shenanigans they get up to. We do need an update though - most libraries don't have a card catalog so the hen needs to lay her egg somewhere else. :-)

Review: Antarctic Antics: A Book of Penguin Poems

Antarctic Antics: A Book of Penguin Poems Antarctic Antics: A Book of Penguin Poems by Judy Sierra
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

My only criticism is the poem that talks about the fish swimming for 2 months doesn't indicate that this is the female penguin after she has given birth. It refers to "mother" and "father" in other poem so I'm not sure why it was excluded here.

Review: Whoosh!: Lonnie Johnson's Super-Soaking Stream of Inventions

Whoosh!: Lonnie Johnson's Super-Soaking Stream of Inventions Whoosh!: Lonnie Johnson's Super-Soaking Stream of Inventions by Chris Barton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Once upon a time I was a counselor at resident camp. We had a lot of international counselors at camp. One week we went to the store on our off time. They found the super soakers which they didn't have in their home countries. They were like kids in the candy shop with all of the different kinds. That next week we had an end of the camp party like never before with water being sprayed everyone and the screams of laughter being heard all over the Sassafras river.

This book took me right back there to that summer but it also opened a window into the dedication of Lonnie Johnson's long path to getting the super soaker made.

We've Got the Whole World in Our Hands We've Got the Whole World in Our Hands by Rafael López
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Another book I can sing! And a version of this traditional hymn I can sing in story time that is accessible for all! And the illustrations! Oh the illustrations! Such a great color palette. And the string that runs through every page spread could be Incorporated into story time to show how connected we all truly are regardless of the things we think might separate us.

The Scrambled States of America The Scrambled States of America by Laurie Keller
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I liked that the states wanted to try something new. I'm not sure how I feel with the idea that ultimately they decided they belonged in their "old" spot and change wasn't for them. Am I putting too much responsibility on a picture book?

Review: The Monkey and the Crocodile: A Jataka Tale from India

The Monkey and the Crocodile: A Jataka Tale from India The Monkey and the Crocodile: A Jataka Tale from India by Paul Galdone
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Before posting my review I wanted to go looking for some background information about this tale as it felt a little stilted to me in this telling. Every other re-telling of this story I can find includes the monkey and the crocodile becoming friends and the crocodiles wife becoming jealous and demanding the heart of the monkey. None of this is present in this retelling. I won't be recommending this version of this tale.

Review: Anno's Journey

Anno's Journey Anno's Journey by Mitsumasa Anno
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A word less picture book of a traveler going across Europe fashioned after the journeys of the author. Is the story one of progress or exposure or something else. The reader gets to decide. Very detailed illustrations. Particularly because the book is wordless could lead to lots of conversation about what is going on in the pictures and what the backstory of the people might be.

Cinderella is my favorite fairy tale and I always enjoy a twisted tale. I liked that this extended the story line past the ball. Extended and changed the story but didn't lose the essence of the connection from the first meeting.

Race to the Sun Race to the Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

I really enjoyed this book. I liked this peek into Navajo culture. I loved that it was set in current time and that the kids had mainstream concerns, being liked by their classmates, standing up to the school bully, being horrible at sports.
